MOUNT VISO SKI TOUR

MOUNT VISO SKI TOUR

Between the Queyras and the Piemont

READY TO SKI ?

Between the Italian valley at the source of the Pô River in the Cottian Alps and the Queyras Valley in France this tour of Mt Viso (3841m) has everything you could want in a touring week, including excellent refuges with very nice food!
Mt Viso dominates the Pô plain, and Turin, making it one of the the emblematic mountains of northern Italy and the Southern Alps.  Add to this a heritage including the Waldensian (Vaudois) ascetic movement, perhaps the first to translate the bible into common language (Provencal), and you have an interesting mix of cultural heritage along with the more common Piedmont, Occitane and French influences.

• From France to Italy and back again
• Wild and less travelled
• Comfortable Refuges

Transfer from Briançon train station to the hotel in Ristolas.

DAY 2

From the hamlet of Echalp at 170m we climb towards the Col de Lacroix at 2299m. Before we cross over, we turn off to take in the Praroussin summit at 2675m before heading back down towards the pass and from there into Italy and down to the Jervis refuge at 1737m for the night.

DAY 3

From the refuge we head up the Pellice valley and past the Granero refuge to eventually arrive at the Col Luisas at 3019m. A very nice descent to the Refuge Pian Melze at 1700m.

DAY 4

Today is the title day… we climb the Col du Viso at 2650m from where we have the possibility for climbing to the summit of the Viso Mozzo at 3019m. Our descent takes us past the Quintino Sella refuge (unguarded) and then onto the Alpetto Refuge at 2268m where we spend the night.

DAY 5

This morning we set out with two passes in view – the Gallarino and the Santa Chiaffredo (2764m) before we have the joy of the descent through the magnificent Vallon de Vallante. We finally arrive at the Ponte Chianale at 1600m and from there have a 5 minute taxi ride to the Piemont village of Chianale at 1800m.

DAY 6

From Chianale we climb towards the Col de St Véran (2844m), and find ourselves back in France! The Caramantran peak at 3025m is our target for the day, for an exceptional panoramic view, followed by a short descent to the Agnel refuge at 2580m.

DAY 7

For our last day we head up the Col de Eychassier (2917m) and then a transversal descent brings us to the foot of the pass at 2827m. From here we ski down to the Lac de Ségure. If we have time we can climb the Ségure peak at 2990m before making our way back to Ristolas.

DAY 8
