3 CIRQUES 3 DAYS

THREE CIRQUES, THREE DAYS

Gavarnie, Estaubé and Troumouse World Heritage

READY TO WALK ?

Starting in Gavarnie Village this three day trek takes you straight up to fabulous views over the Breche de Roland and the Gavarnie Cirque for your first night. The subsequent days bring you over high passes, down through glacial valleys, and into a tiny pastoral hamlet for two nights. From here you walk up into Troumouse Cirque (the largest glacial cirque in the Pyrenees). The limestone landscapes are soft underfoot and it is impressive to observe how the massive glaciers of the last 2 million years have carved these huge semi-circular valley heads.

ITINERARY

DAY 1

Collection early morning from Luz (ask for accommodation options the night prior) and transfer to Gavarnie village where we start our trek. We take a path that avoid the day trippers heading through the valley floor and then heading up to the base of the Grand Cascade for a high pressure shower! After lunch we continue our climb up the side of the cirque to the Espugettes Refuge (2027m) where we spend the night.

DAY 2

Leaving Espugettes we climb to the Hourquette d’Alans for wonderful views into both the Gavarnie Cirque and the Estaubé Cirque. “Hourquette” simply means a small pass, and the transition from one glacial cirque to the next is dramatic indeed. We head down into the Estaubé Cirque and the Gloriettes dam, before a traverse towards Troumouse and down to the hamlet of Héas at its base. We spend the night in a lovely auberge there.

DAY 3

Today is our third cirque, and, at 14kms across, it is the largest in the Pyrenees. We first walk up into a neighbouring valley and then traverse into the Troumouse Cirque via a dramatic doorway. After visiting the lakes on the high plateau in the centre of the cirque we descend back into Héas for collection. Return to Luz for dinner and bed in a comfortable hostel.

DAY 4

Bus out of Luz, or transfer to Lourdes (depending on group times).
