GRAN PARADISO SKI TOUR
Summit the only 4000m summit entirely in Italy
READY TO SKI ?
Reaching a 4000m summit remains an excellent milestone in the life of a skier, and one that is our target this week. The Gran Paradiso (4061m) is situated in the heard of the National Park of the same name, and is the only 4000m summit entirely in Italy. The national park was initially created to protect the Alpine ibex, which remained only in this area having been hunted from everywhere else. We will begin our week acclimatising, and then start the traverse, staying within our traditional ‘tour’ spirit. This gives us all the best chance of achieving the summit along with a very nice ski journey.
• Summit the Gran Paradiso, only 4000m peak entirely in Italy
• Plenty of time to acclimatise as we slowly move higher
• Have a view onto Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn from the summit
• Spend the week in Italy!

Arrival at Geneva airport and taxi transfer to Rhêmes Notre Dame in the Val d’Aosta, where we sleep for the night, sort our equipment and discuss the week with the guide.
From the end of the road at 1800m we climb to the Bénévolo refuge at 2280m where we spend two nights. During the afternoon we will revise our avalanche rescue techniques and there is also the possibility of climbing the Pointe Paletta (3021m).
Continuing with our acclimatisation we climb the Pointe Bazel (3440m) and spend another night at Bénévolo.
Today we start our traverse towards the Gran Paradiso. We first climb the Punta Basei (3338m), which is followed by a lovely descent in a rocky cirque, before a final short climb to the Refuge Chivasso at 2504m.
From Chivasso we continue our route towards the east and the Col de la Pointe Foura (3100m). We are not done yet though, and have quite a long day with several climbs and descents before we arrive at the Refuge Vittorio Emanuele (2714m).
A relatively long climb of 1300m brings us ot the summit of the Gran Paradiso at 4061m, we almost anyway – the last few meters are on a rocky arête. This is followed by a magnificant descent on the Laveciau glacier down to the Chabod Refuge at 2730m.
After the excitement of yesterday we set off to climb towards the small unguarded refuge of Sberna at 3401m and have a slightly technical start to the descent. The descent soon becomes more welcoming as we traverse across a small summer pastures hamlet. If snow conditions are good we can ski all the way down to the village of Bien, at 1630m in the Valsavarenche. We then have a short transfer to our ‘hotel in Rhêmes.
Transfer back to the Geneva train station or airport.
